First to the Moon Capital Campaign

Artist rendering of Heritage Flight Museum after new construction is complete.

The Heritage Flight Museum has launched a Facilities Expansion Capital Campaign to turn our wonderful aircraft hangars at Skagit-Bayview Airport into a true destination museum and events center. In our effort to build a sustainable museum facility to meet our goal of “Honoring Veterans and Keeping History Alive,” this facility expansion will include event-appropriate bathrooms, a dedicated maintenance hangar, an Apollo 8 feature gallery and entryway, a 1968 room highlighting the many tragic events of that year, offices appropriate for long-term management of the museum and collection, and more. This facility expansion will allow for events-venue income to sustain the museum and will provide space to meet the goal of developing a youth STEM education program.

Join us in moving HFM to its full potential as a resource for preserving history and improving education.

Background

The Heritage Flight Museum was founded by Apollo 8 Astronaut Maj Gen William Anders.  After many years working to achieve a proper home and facility in other locations,  the Heritage Flight Museum (HFM) found a home in 2014 at Skagit Regional Airport.  We have committed to developing our facilities in 2021 to allow us to fully meet the interests of our community by way of a $2 million facility expansion project. Our Founders, Bill & Valerie Anders, have committed to matching 100% of the donations received.

Our first phase of construction is now complete, with added bathrooms appropriate for our larger events, offices to effectively support our primary staff, a volunteer break room, and archival storage facilities appropriate for the many artifacts that are an integral part of the museum and the community.  Our second phase will  provide more space for aviation exhibits, historical artifacts, and maintenance facilities. This expansion will add an 11,300 square foot hangar building to house a new maintenance facility, as well as two exciting new historical exhibits: The ’68 Experience and the Earthrise Gallery. The Earthrise Gallery will include the iconic photograph taken by Anders while piloting the Apollo 8 mission in 1968. This acclaimed photo of the Earth and some of the Moon’s surface taken from lunar orbit, has been heralded as one of the most significant images of the 20th century.

The Heritage Flight Museum is already a valued asset of the community.  With these proper facilities, and proper staff to support the programs, Heritage Flight Museum could grow its endeavors to meet the hopes of those influencers in Skagit County that are looking for a cultural asset that can be many things to the community, including an effective tool for youth STEM education.
